Although it is still winter, there is work and planning needed to make sure our garden stays beautiful and a part of our children’s education.
Earthbites has been busy tending to the garden over the last few weeks, including winter fruit tree pruning and pruning the wild roses. The pruning has greatly improved the light into the garden.
After discussion with the teachers, the garden will be divided into areas that will support big ideas from the curriculum including pollination and bees, healthy eating and life cycle of plants. Teachers intend on pairing younger and older classes to investigate these curriculum areas together. Students and teachers will also start planning using the square foot garden method and starting transplants such as broccoli and greens.
Soil is on order for spring planting. Upcoming work for parent volunteers is removing mulch from raised beds and placing it in the back by the wild roses and raspberries. We also require a parent to follow up with the city (“pester the city”) regarding delivery of free logs to our garden.
Suzanne will be in the garden again starting this Thursday until recess — volunteers to move soil would be appreciated.
Parents are also welcome to join EarthBites classes and learn about planning their spring and summer gardens.
