On behalf of the Trafalgar PAC, I would like to wish everyone a very happy summer. I hope you find the holidays fun and refreshing — and we look forward to seeing many of you back in September.
I am very pleased to announce that our volunteer recruitment week was successful, and we have many people who have already signed up to help out with the PAC next year. In particular, I would like to announce that Cheryl Gravkin has agreed to become PAC Chair and Kate Power PAC Vice-Chair. I will stay on as PAC Past Chair as part of a re-structuring to ensure sharing of duties and succession planning. Thank you Cheryl, Kate and all the other wonderful people who have taken on positions. Please check out our About the PAC page for all of the details. (You’ll see there are still some spaces open, so if you would like to take on a role in September there’s still lots of room for help!)
As part of our volunteer recruitment week activities, the PAC sponsored two special prizes: a random draw for all parents who signed up to volunteer next year and a free pizza lunch for the division with the most parents signed up during volunteer recruitment week.
At yesterday’s volunteer tea, we announced our lucky winners!
The winner of the volunteer draw is CJ Wu! CJ receives a gift certificate for a relaxing foot massage at Footworks Relaxology on West Broadway. Congratulations CJ!
The winner of the free pizza lunch is division 8! Division 8 has more parents signed up during volunteer recruitment week than any other division. Congratulations division 8! (Divisions 9,14,15,17,21 were very close.)
Thank you Julia Stachowiak for organizing such a lovely tea yesterday. And thank you to everyone who volunteered this year and everyone who’s signed up to volunteer next year. The school wouldn’t be the same without you!
2011/2012 Trafalgar PAC Chair
Your division can win a FREE pizza lunch!
Many of the school’s most important and fun programs only happen thanks to the hard work of parent volunteers. Imagine a school without hot lunches, International Dinners, supplemental sporting equipment or additional library and learning resource supplies – to name just a few!
We need your help to keep these programs going. This past school year, most of our programs have been administered by just a handful of key volunteers – and most of these volunteers are no longer able to provide this support. If you haven’t volunteered recently or if you’ve never volunteered before, the PAC needs you now!
You can learn about and sign up for volunteer positions during Trafalgar’s volunteer recruitment week on May 28-June 1. There will be an information table outside the school (or inside if it rains) each morning and afternoon during the week with volunteer job descriptions. We will also be sending out more information during the week via class emails, the PAC website (https://trafalgarpac.ca) and Twitter (@Trafnews) during the week.
You can sign up for a volunteer position by visiting our information table or emailing email@example.com. If you sign up for a position during volunteer recruitment week, your name will be entered into a draw. In addition, the class that has the most parents sign up for volunteer positions will win a FREE pizza lunch!
And a huge thank you to all parent volunteers who helped make the 2011-12 school year such a great one! The school wouldn’t be the same without your efforts.
We will be holding our 2012 Sports Day on Friday June 15, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please note the 1:00 p.m. dismissal time.
Our planned schedule is as follows:
09:00 All students go to their regular classrooms for attendance.
09:10 Classes meet on the westside of the school for warm-up and cheers.
10:00 Sports Day stations begin on the eastside of the school.
11:31 Primary students go to the gym and receive Hot Lunch.
Intermediate students participate in the Tug of War on the grass field (eastside of the school)
12:00 Intermediate students go to the gym and receive Hot Lunch.
12:30 Return to classrooms for freezies, ribbons, and overall point tally.
01:00 Dismissal from classrooms.
This day relies on parent volunteers to run the stations, deliver water, snacks, freezies and lunches. Parents and family members are welcome to watch the activities and spend the day with us.
In the event of heavy rainfall, the Sports Day committee will arrange for alternative activities inside the school. We encourage students to dress in their team colours. Please also ensure your child is dressed for the weather and has suitable clothing for running and active movement. If the weather is sunny, we advise students to wear a hat and sunscreen (applied before school).
Thank you for your attention to these requests and we look forward to a fun and exciting Sports Day this year!
See you there!
Trafalgar’s Sports Day Committee
If you are willing to volunteer in your child’s class on Sports Day (setting up, running, and cleaning up a station, distributing snacks, etc.) please let your child’s teacher know. Thank you very much for helping us have a fun and safe Sports Day!
Children aren’t the only things growing at Trafalgar School! The school garden is already in full swing with stage two of the school greening project almost complete. Thanks to the financial support of the Evergreen Foundation and the Trafalgar PAC (with your donations!), our hard working volunteers and students have planted cherry trees, plum trees, raspberries, strawberries, and Saskatoon berries to create an edible orchard. We’ve also planted beautiful native shrubs and flowers to attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. We’ve also put in an herb garden and installed an outside classroom with 32 seats! Students have been wonderful participants and supporters, moving tons of dirt and gravel, digging holes of trees and watering, watering, watering!
If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, come have a look the next time you’re at the school.
Although all this development has been wonderful, the school greening committee really needs you’re help. We need more volunteers to help with watering, weeding, harvesting food, and helping with gardening classes and pocket markets. If you have even just a little time to spare (whether one time or over several weeks) please email the PAC and we’ll forward your email to volunteer organizer Suzanne.
Our next PAC meeting will be Tuesday, May 15th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the school library. We will be discussing volunteer recruitment week and other end of year activities. All Trafalgar parents are welcome to attend!
